Do resistance bands actually work?

It depends on what you want to achieve. Resistance bands are effective for muscle strengthening, burning fat / losing weight and endurance. Therefore, Resistance bands work if this is what you want to achieve but if you want to replace more traditional resistance training methods such as weights with resistance bands refer to the 4th question.

Which type of resistance band is best?

Again, this depends solely on your aim. Resistance bands come in various sizes which represent different resistances. Different workouts will also require different types of resistant band. Smaller bands are more effective for exercises involving the thighs and glute activation exercises and a larger sized resistant band would be useful for shoulder exercises and other upper body exercises. The other variations of resistance bands also have pretty specific uses such as the therapy resistance bands so it is recommendable to search for the type of resistance bands according to which body part you want to focus on or objective you want to achieve

If you are looking for the different sizes of resistance bands, these are colour coded according to the amount of resistance each band represents. For a breakdown on the most popular types of Resistance bands and what they can be used for, please  take a look at our Resistance Bands Buyer's Guide

Can you build muscle with resistance bands?

Resistant bands are not as effective for muscle building as they are for muscle strengthening. Although resistance bands have been proven to be capable of promoting muscle growth, other forms of resistance training are more effective. Please refer to our Exercise Guide for a comprehensive explanation of how resistance bands can be used for muscle and how they compare to more traditional forms of resistance training.

Are resistance bands better than weights?

There is no objective answer as weights are a more suitable option for some people than others. Resistance bands are better in terms of cost, they are far more inexpensive than weights or a gym membership, they are more portable and can be used almost anywhere. In terms of results, weights are (generally) more effective for muscle building and muscle activity but resistance bands are (generally) more effective for muscle strengthening, muscle quality and endurance due to the inconsistency of the resistance. Please refer to our Resistance Bands Exercise Guide for more information and videos on how to use Resistance Bands.

Is a resistance band good for losing weight?

Any kind of resistance training is effective for losing weight. People generally assume you can only lose weight from cardio-intensive workouts but resistant training methods such as resistance bands promote what is known as the ‘after-burn’ effect which essentially refers to the muscles using significant amounts of energy and using fat stores to replace this, after your workout with your resistance bands your muscles will also require significant energy lost through anaerobic respiration and for muscle recovery which all promotes weight loss.

Can I use resistance bands every day?

As with any type of resistance training, it’s a good idea to use resistance bands in moderation so your muscles have time to recover and get used to certain resistances. Our Exercise Guide explains how including resistant bands in your workout at least once a week can have a positive impact compared to not using them but if you only use resistance bands and are not doing demanding workouts then you could use resistance bands every day.
